On Monday Google announced that it would be working with 30 mobile phone makes on Android, an open mobile phone platform, free to developers. The FT describes it at "a package of Linux-based software designed to make it cheaper and easier to build the next generation of smartphone and mobile phone services."
According to the FT Android "would let any software application or internet service run on the devices, reducing the power of the mobile operators to extract a toll as gatekeepers."
